Hire boats at Selnes Camping

Our guests want to be able to fish in the fjord, but also face the rough seas of the Atlantic.

These are two requirements that the boats and their motorization must meet.

It’s always the same question – which type of boat offers the greatest benefit? And here, too, there are two sides to every coin:

  • Boats with a deep V-hull (Deep-V) can cut through steep waves and are especially designed for use on the high seas, where there is often rough water. Such boats are suitable for deep-sea fishing.
  • Skiffs or John boats have a flat hull. They are only suitable for waters with little swell, such as rivers or lakes. On the other hand, they have a shallow draft and can also be used in shallow waters. These can be classic small motorboats, but also include inflatable boats.
  • Boats with a semi-V hull, such as bass boats, combine the advantages and disadvantages of the two hull shapes above. They generally have more stability, but also less suitability for rough water.

Another decision criterion: cabin cruiser or console boat? The advantages and disadvantages are obvious.

In spring and fall, in cold winds and sudden rain, the cabin boat scores points. The console boat offers more freedom of movement and more flexible space for fishing. Some guests complained about the lack of cabin cruisers in Selnes. So in 2023 we added a GRP Quicksilver cabin cruiser to the range on a trial basis. The result: no demand.

Why? Because the boat has room for a maximum of 3 people for fishing and because it is more expensive to rent than an aluminum boat. What would change if we bought a larger cabin cruiser? Probably nothing. The comparable cabin cruiser from Kværnø Boats, which could complement our aluminum boats, costs twice as much.

Mit der Frage danach, wer für sein Angelboot den doppelten Mietpreis bezahlen würde, ist die Investitionsentscheidung nicht so schwer zu treffen. Weder für unsere Gäste noch für Selnes Camping.

In short, anyone who has ever been out and about in the various waters of Norway can report a wide range of experiences.

Lateral stability, buoyancy, load capacity, good boarding options, space, maneuverability, rod holders, fish finder, chart plotter, storage space for life jackets and fuel supplies, easy access to the fuel tank, to name just a few points, all play a decisive role.

Based on these fundamental considerations, we have decided that we will continue to invest in aluminum boats. Only time will tell whether these will be Kværnø boats. The current price trend does not speak in favor of this. But there are also good boat builders in Lithuania who sell their aluminum boats in Norway.

What is certain, however, is that we will gradually convert all boats to 50 hp so that you can get home safely even in “heavy weather”. We will carry out a conversion in 2024 on the aluminum boats that are underway with the shaping bracket at the stern. This bracket is a nuisance for many anglers because it often gets in the way when handling the boat. We will remove the bracket and move the position lights to the helm. As a result, you will no longer need to pay attention to this detail when booking a boat from the 2024 season.

If you bring two padlocks with you, you can secure your fishing equipment on your boat in the prepared and lockable aluminum boxes. This saves you having to transport your equipment every day.

For your safety, we are selling all Øyen boats with low sides this year.
Simply because inexperienced skippers can quickly get into difficult situations with these boats and we don’t want to encourage that.
And of course there is safety-related equipment at Selnes Camping that every boat needs, such as a lifejacket for every person on board, working position lighting, fire extinguishers, an emergency number in the field of vision and a First aid kit.

One more sentence to be on the safe side:

We had an incident in the 2023 season where a guest cut himself while filleting on the boat. Surely not unusual and not a rarity?

In this case it was.

The guest had and still has haemophilia, a disorder of the blood clotting process, also known colloquially as “haemophilia”. A situation like this poses several challenges for all guests on board:

  1. How extensive is the injury?
  2. What can be used to stop the bleeding?
  3. What is on board to treat the injured person?
  4. What can be used to cover the wound sterilely to prevent infection?

The answers were relatively simple:

To 1. the extent of the injury was clearly visible.
2. no idea …
To 3. nothing that could be used …
4. a few cleaning rags …

His colleagues took care of the injured angler and the wound was later stitched up at the hospital in Namsos.

What are the consequences of this incident? Our investment in your safety 2024! Safety First – Our safety promise for your vacation at Selnes Camping. From the 2024 season, you will receive a first aid kit in the form of a sealed first aid kit when you hand over your boat, which you will return undamaged when you take it back. If the seal is broken, you keep the first aid kit and we will charge you the purchase price.

Boating

Boat license

In Norway and for the motorized boats of Selnes Camping, the rule applies that all skippers born in or after 1980 must have a skipper’s license. This rule does not apply to anyone born before 1980. All boaters must pay particular attention to shipping and ferry traffic and to navigating the waterways in order to avoid accidents in shallow water areas.

Our filling station

Since 2023, Selnes Camping has had a filling station with a capacity of 5,000 liters.

This refueling facility is available to you daily from 8:00 – 20:00. You can refuel whenever you want within this time window. You determine the amount of fuel yourself. You assign your own password when you hand over your boat. You use this to log in and out when refueling. The telematics system transmits the fuel quantity online to the reception. Transparency, which is important to us, so that nothing is left to chance in this sensitive area. You have 100% control.

Ferry and ship traffic

Safety instructions

Ferry and ship traffic

Regular shipping and ferry traffic is to be expected in the Namsenfjord and on the access routes from/to the Atlantic. Therefore, sailing on sight at an appropriate speed and mutual consideration is a basic prerequisite for trouble-free shipping traffic. Switching on the lights when it gets dark will keep your boat safe and make navigation easier for you and other boaters.

Shallow water areas

Shallow water areas

All boats at Selnes Camping are equipped with Garmin navigation devices. The shallow water areas are marked in light blue on all maps. These areas are not to be navigated in order to avoid damage to the engine and hull. The chart plotter records your boat route using the GPS data. This gives you a very good option for finding your way easily and well even in unfamiliar waters.

Water police

Safety instructions

Water police

The water police check compliance with the navigation rules, that life jackets are worn and that the 0.00 per mille rule is observed. Experience has shown that the officers are very friendly and helpful, but also very strict if the rules are broken. The same applies here: Compliance with the rules saves time and money.

Insurance

Insurance

We recommend that our guests take out skipper’s liability insurance in their home country prior to departure. Such insurance covers third-party damage that may arise from the use of the boats. This can be helpful because damage to the engines can occur not only in shallow water. Flotsam can also cause damage, which is also covered.
