Salmon Fishing

Unfortunately, this year’s salmon season is already over after ten days. It cannot be assumed that this is a temporary measure. The number of rising fish is so low that the Norwegian Fisheries Agency feels compelled to drastically restrict salmon fishing from southern Norway to Trondelag. This means that fishing with set nets and angling in the rivers is prohibited with immediate effect. This also affects the Namsen, which may no longer be fished. Catches landed while fishing in fjords or at sea are exempt from this.
Salmon anglers should therefore enquire in advance with the leaseholder where they wish to fish.

The events follow the attention! Bathroom Larvik + Namsos challenge us.

In the email dated 13 November 2023, I wrote to you that we wanted to replace the shower cubicles in the Larvik and Namsos houses.

So the old shower cubicles were removed. The new shower cubicles had already been procured.

In contrast to the previous shower trays, we decided against the cheap version.

To make the shower tray more stable, we bought models with a shower tray with a concrete body covered in high-quality plastic.

Lo and behold, the connections for the old fittings are on the wall on the right. The connections of the new shower enclosure come out of the panel that is installed in the corner of the shower enclosure. The picture shows the new element in the corner.

Now there are only two alternatives:

  1. work with connecting hoses, which will always be visible, or
  2. remove the wall panelling, lay the connections and install new wall panelling elements.

This is tantamount to a complete refurbishment, as the dismantled panels cannot be reused. This is an expense that has not been budgeted for.

We decided not to do things by halves because the bathroom furniture was also in a poor condition and the washbasins were damaged.

So you can look forward to 2024.
Then both houses will not only have new kitchens and beds, but also modernised bathrooms.

Best regards
Yours, Günther Aust

The conversion to houses – or how two huts ‘grow up’

Who doesn’t know them, the smallest huts in the camp with the best view? The pictures show the ‘growth’ of the cabins in colour, without the addition of the bathrooms and storage room. In keeping with our promise to focus on service and quality for our guests’ most precious days of the year, the conversion of both motorbike cabins was not a “CAN” but a “MUST”.

was not a ‘CAN’, but a ‘MUST’.

And so the building permit from the municipality of Namsos was put into practice. Two dedicated carpenters, who had already helped us with the roof of the container, completed the shell construction in early spring 2023.

Their promise to continue in May was cancelled due to their construction site in Hamburg during the same period. The Norwegian tradesmen, such as civil engineers, electricians, plumbers, floor layers and suppliers of building materials, had of course not waited for Selnes Camping either. Added to this was the holiday month of July in Norway, when most companies are on holiday. This put pressure on the schedule and therefore also on Stefan and Philipp, who had to take over the progress of the work – in addition to the work that was due during the season anyway.

Sebastian, a carpenter, and his girlfriend Alena supported us in July and August. Once again, I would like to thank everyone involved and all those who supported us for their hard work and commitment.

Despite all their efforts, we did not manage to complete the renovation of the first house on time by 28 July 2023. The one who suffered was our regular guest, Geraard N.

After 8 days in Kristiansund, we could no longer accommodate him for three days in Bergen. We had to offer him an alternative, which probably met the old standard of the motorbike cabins, but of course not his booking. I can understand his annoyance and his departure without greeting. I am personally very sorry, because a holiday is not a working day when something doesn’t work out.

Herewith, and at this point, once again my personal request for an apology to Geraard N. combined with the hope that we will be able to make ‘amends’ at some point.

House Bergen was completed on 16 August 2023: we had just put the chairs at the tables and were still wiring the SAT connections when Det and Ute stood in the doorway …

A very sporty project, because someone like me had simply underestimated the scope of the conversions and the mentality of the Norwegian craftsmen. This is not meant to be a negative judgement of the Norwegian craftsmen. They actually do a good and reliable job when they are there … But this is exactly where the difference to Germany lies.

While the majority of us are used to meeting deadlines, it can happen in Norway that there is at least a week between the promise and the realisation.

This can quickly disrupt a schedule and throw targets out of kilter.

Haugesund House has now become a winter construction site and will be available on schedule for the start of the 2024 season.

Conclusion:

Give everyone a chance – first and foremost yourself – and learn from ‘your’ mistakes. That’s a promise!

We were pleased to receive your positive feedback on the conversion of these cabins into houses and the installation of the new kitchens in Larvik and Namsos.

Thank you for appreciating our endeavours and telling us that we are on the right track.

Should you ever be dissatisfied with anything, please let us know. For us, constructive criticism is the basis for all improvements – ultimately for your benefit.

Best regards
