How to catch salmon

Fishing for salmon in the Namsen, the Bogna or other rivers around Namsos is one of the supreme disciplines. Salmon fishing has been very popular in our region for centuries. Once a sport for the privileged, it is now a sport for all those who enjoy it. Catching success varies greatly and the angling lore is naturally extensive. Everyone swears by their own fishing methods – and this is certainly justified. What is generally considered helpful for success? The spectrum is very broad and starts with fishing with a fresh worm, a spinning rod or a fly. An important point is the water level, which very often determines the success of salmon fishing. It is therefore helpful to find out about the water levels in the rivers before fishing. This can have a major impact on success, especially on small rivers.

The rule of thumb on small rivers is: if the water rises after the rain, the river will produce “new fish”. Insiders swear by reading the water colors. As a result, the professionals match the bait colors to the water colors.

This means:

In clear water, the colors silver, blue or green are used for the lures.
In slightly cloudy water, copper-colored lures are the better choice.
And finally, of course, the location plays a decisive role.

Large stones, strong currents, waterfalls and bends in the river are the preferred spots for salmon.
We can only hope that the salmon enthusiasts will find the right location in the best weather to achieve their catch quota. We are already keeping our fingers crossed.
