Important questions about fishing in Selnes

Norway is one of the most challenging and attractive fishing areas for sea anglers. And not just in Europe, but worldwide. If you want to catch big fish, Norway is the right destination for you. The country also offers magnificent landscapes. A trip to Selnes is always a good decision, because here fishing, recreation and nature can be ideally combined. But as with all trips, a journey to Selnes is only an experience if it is well prepared.

The season in Selnes begins in March and April, when the Namsen ice has passed through the fjord. Catches during this time are concentrated on cod, ling, lump and herring. In the summer months from May/June, coalfish, cod, redfish and halibut are the sure-fire candidates for a successful fishing vacation in Selnes. The season ends in October and during this time all fishing enthusiasts have a real chance of good catches. The rough seas of the Atlantic, with their often unpredictable weather surprises, have little influence on fishing in the Namsenfjord. Apart from a few days when it can be quite windy, it is always possible to go fishing here. Nevertheless, you should be aware that the temperatures in spring and late fall require suitable clothing.

Clothing should be waterproof, warm and buoyant. Gloves and a warm and windproof hat are helpful in these times to be able to enjoy the fishing experience even on cold days. It is always helpful to be prepared for such days. On windless and sunny days, it is better to take off your hat and gloves than not to have them on board.

Summer in Selnes is quite stable with temperatures around 25° C, with little wind and sun. But you should still be prepared for rain and windy days even in summer.

It should not be forgotten that we are in the far north, where darkness is a foreign word in summer, but the sun is very intense during the day. That’s why sun cream and a hat are essential on board in summer, as are a rain jacket and plenty of soft drinks.

For beginners and novices who have discovered their love of sea fishing, fishing equipment is often associated with many question marks. Here are a few suggestions for fishing equipment for natural bait fishing and pilking:

Boat rod 20-50 lbs = 100-400 g, rod length 1.60-2.20 m, medium multi-reel or large stationary reel, 200 – 300 m braided line with 20 kg load capacity, cod leaders, herring and mackerel leaders for lure fishing, jigs and pilkers up to 300 g.

Very good catches of cod, coalfish, haddock and ling are possible in the Namsenfjord with pilkers and rubber lures. Below is a recommendation for fishing equipment for pilk fishing, which is also very suitable for fishing for natural bait:

Pilk rod, 50-200 g casting weight, rod length 1.60 – 2.20 m, 60 reel, 300 m braided line with 20 kg load capacity, pilk 50-200 g in various colors, replacement treble hooks, single hooks, rubber fish / twister 8-20 cm, jig heads 30-150 g, mackerel leader for bait fishing.

With this equipment you are very well equipped for an eventful vacation in Selnes.

Elastic band or copper wire to secure the bait, gaff, release pliers, landing net, filleting knife, filleting knife, and some rags or cloths, vacuum sealer with bags, household foil, cool box for transport home, highlighter for labeling the packaging, mono line for tying leaders, swivels, snap rings, large stopper beads, carabiners.

Here is another sentence about packing the fillets. As an alternative to vacuum packing, wrapping the fillets as a roll in household foil has proven to be the best method. The fillets are wrapped tightly in household foil and frozen as a roll. No freezer burn occurs during freezing and the costs are considerably lower compared to vacuum film.

You are accommodated in comfortably furnished houses with heat pumps to ensure your well-being. You can pack your catch of the day for the freezer on the terrace in front of your house. Each house has its own freezer where you can freeze your catches in your cool box ready for transportation. You can receive German-language programs via satellite, WLAN and Internet are also available, as are a washing machine and dryer. You can park your car right next to your house or directly at our boathouse.

You can choose between 40, 50, 100 and 150 hp engines for the aluminum boats.

In the standard class of 40 hp and 50 hp boats, there is a clear trend towards 50 hp engines. Anglers want to get to their fishing grounds quickly. But even in somewhat rougher conditions, stable engine power simply provides better maneuverability and more safety. The popular argument of fuel savings with 40 hp unfortunately falls down, because the evaluation of average consumption shows a higher fuel consumption per day with 40 hp. There are certainly some uncertainties here. This starts with the wind conditions and the speed driven, as well as the number of anglers/boat. But these differences also exist with 50 hp boats. In this respect, the trend is not wrong. That is why we will systematically equip our boats with 50 hp engines when we replace them at regular intervals. We are sure that with a good driving style in the medium speed range of 4,200 rpm and good trim, you will always be economical on the water.

and with a good trim, you will always be economical underway.

On the boats from Selnes Camping you will find everything you need to make your fishing vacation a positive experience – fire extinguishers, life jackets, angler’s bait, buckets, brushes and of course the chart plotter with fishfinder.

Filleting in the boat can be done and you get rid of your fish waste immediately. In rough seas, however, the cut can quickly miss the fish and end up in your finger (although this has also happened at the filleting area).

Filleting can also be done at the filleting area at Selnes Camping. Here you simply have more space and you are on solid ground. This facility has been used intensively over the last few years – so it needs to be replaced this year. The turning of the cutting plates last year was cosmetic. The stainless steel fastening screws are the enemies of the filleting knife.

This year we will renew the filleting area by replacing parts of the supporting structure, replacing the table covering completely and extending it by 5 meters and screwing suitable 20 mm thick plastic plates onto it so that the fish knives can glide freely again. Should this result in temporary restrictions, which we want to keep to a minimum, we ask for your understanding in advance.
