The “Oasen” leisure pool in Namsos, built into the rock, fascinates with its unique construction. With a 50-metre lane, paddling pool, warm water pool, sauna, water slide and sunbeds, the leisure pool is a welcome alternative and change of pace on cool or rainy days. www.oasen-namsos.no
Namsos is a municipality in the province of Trondelag, which has the administrative status of a municipality compared to Germany. Around 15,000 inhabitants live in the municipality of Namsos, which covers an area of around 2,100 km². With a population density of around seven inhabitants/km², the municipality of Namsos is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Norway. The municipality is named Namsos after the Namsen River, which flows into the Namsenfjord. There is a direct connection to the Atlantic Ocean from the Namsenfjord. This makes Namsos a port town and, with its timber port, an important commercial and economic center in central Norway. Namsos was founded in 1845 and, in the classic Norwegian architectural style, consists mainly of wooden houses built in a small, low-lying promontory that stretches all the way to the harbor. Sparsely wooded rock massifs line the north of Namsos up to a height of 180 m, while the river landscape stretches eastwards along the Namsen. On the way along the coastal road Fv 17, between Namsos and Selnes, you will find the Norwegian Sawmill Museum in Spillum. The world’s first steam saw is still in operation there. Opening hours: May – Sept. / Mon – Fri. 9 am – 3 pm / www.sagbruksmuseet.no
Another attraction is Rock City. The music center focuses on the history of “Trønder Rock”, which originated in the region. You can take a close look at the instruments yourself. You can also visit the hit factory – the converted garage to be precise – of Norwegian music legend Åge Aleksandersen, who wrote one of his best songs there. Of course, concerts are also held here. The music center is part of the Scandic Rock City Hotel.
In Grong, 60 km from Namsos, the high ropes course in “Namsskogan Park” offers plenty of variety with quad biking, trampoline jumping or a visit to the animal enclosures, where you can get closer to the local animals than in the wild.
After about 1 hour’s drive on the south side of the bay on the Namsenfjord, directly on the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the largest of 11 German coastal fortresses in Norway. Built between 1941 and 1945, this historic site is an exciting experience for young and old. The peninsula has well-marked hiking trails, stairs and bridges to the fortress and the harbor.
We have a recommendation “on the spot” for our guests. To the right of our campsite is an inconspicuous rock massif, as there are many around Namsos. You will find out what distinguishes the “local mountain” from many other rocks if you walk up the path to the right of the reception. At the end of the path, you come to a small plateau with a beautiful view of the fjord. It wouldn’t be Norway if you had already reached your destination!
From this small plateau, a narrow and almost inconspicuous path leads further uphill. If you follow this path consistently, you will reach a second plateau with a bench. The view from here will more than reward you for your efforts. You have an unbeatable view over the entire fjord – including Namsos. And if you’ve forgotten your cell phone or camera, you’ll want to take the path a second time.
A very beautiful, rewarding and challenging hiking trail takes you from Bangsund to Håmyrfjellet, a mountain in Bangsund. With a summit height of 229 m and 269 m above sea level, this is the highest mountain in the area.
The starting point of the hike is the petrol station in Bangsund. Park your car there, then walk 500 m in a southerly direction over the bridge and turn left into Håmyrvegen. The path is signposted from here. The 2.1 km long trail leads you to the summit in approx. 48 minutes, along steep slopes and plateaus. Here you will be rewarded with a wonderful view of Bangsund and the Namsenfjord. Dogs are allowed on the trail, although they must be kept off the lead in some areas.
Please respect the private property of the residents along Håmyrvegen and park your vehicle at the petrol station.
“Bjørumsklompen”, a viewing platform 114 meters above Namsos, offers a fantastic view over Namsos, the harbour and the surrounding landscape.
The open-air museum, “Namdalsmuseet”, offers two special features. Firstly, the largest fembøring in the world – a Norwegian boat with 12 oars and it is home to a special exhibition on the Norwegian hospital system. The oldest building of the local hospital was moved into the area for this purpose – www.namdalsmuseet.no
This hike takes you from Bangsund to the 220 m high plateau with an enchanting view of the Namsenfjord in approx. 3.7 km in 90 minutes. Here too, dogs are allowed off the lead in some areas.
Around Selnes, in the area between Namsos, Spillum and Bangsund, there are extensive forest areas where picking berries and mushrooms is great fun and the yields for a good meal are waiting to be harvested. Chanterelles are both highly sought after and easy to find. But here too, perseverance and a bit of luck are the companions of the diligent.
